Lenten Labyrinth

Our Church has secured a massive labyrinth that is being set up in the sanctuary for Lent.

Come walk a path that has one way in and one way out. Labyrinths have been employed by Christians and many faith traditions over the years as a means of drawing near to oneself and to the Holy Spirit.

Come pray, meditate, walk, and let the Spirit of God refresh you through this ancient spiritual practice.

The labyrinth will be available every day except Sunday, February 22 through April 3. Signup for your personal timeslot here

Share from your week:

Kari – I felt a lot of joy this past week when I had a little patient who was 4 years old. First off she says – I love coming to the dentist. You always love to hear that. We kept visiting throughout her appointment. And then she looked at me and says – Will you give me a tour of the office? I said – Well, okay. So she got down from her chair and she grabbed my hand and held my hand as I gave her a tour. We have kind of a little loop; we just walked around and I was telling her things about the rooms. She was asking me questions. She was just adorable and it totally made my day. She was such a good little girl.

Pastor Brett – Beautiful, beautiful, thanks Kari.

Bonnie – This week I took 105 treat bags, regular & sugar free, for caregivers and for residents of Maryville and Cherry Blossom Assisted Living Center. I couldn’t see the smiles on the faces of the activity directors that got them from me, but the words that they said and the appreciation that they showed made me believe that what we did for this Random Act of Kindness was a great thing and the people are going to appreciate it.

Pastor Brett – Amazing, that’s awesome! Thank you Bonnie for sharing that. We share in your joy.

Sally – Dave and I went cross country skiing outside our front door yesterday for about 2 hours. We went all around, probably 4 miles. I think number one - just being able to do that was amazing & felt so joyful. But, what we loved the most was – everywhere there were children sledding on saucers, on tubes with parents. It just felt like normal life! Like the kids were out, I think we saw 50-60 kids. Hills and neighborhoods where parents were guarding the streets below it, and saying – Okay, you can go now! We said – Where are the hor d'oeuvres for us? Can we join your party? It was just really fun to see families and kids just enjoying life together! It was awesome.

Pastor Brett – Amen. Thank you Sally. I also had that same sense here because normally a snow day is a break from the norm, and kids are home from school and stuff. With this past year, everyone’s been home from school anyway. So, it’s a break back into the norm. You know, I had that same exact sort of thing seeing kids in my neighborhood; Ky sledding and all that stuff. So much fun. Amen.

Martha – I’m going to give the old people perspective of the snow here. We didn’t see any cross country skiers. We did see a few walker marks out there on the snow around the neighborhood. Actually we haven’t seen any…Even though snow is an inconvenience to many people I know, there’s just something about it when it starts to snow. And then my sisters started texting. So, we had Sarah and even my son joined the text. We had his cousins joining the text; we had my sisters about the ice rink. One sister lives in Florida, so there having thunderstorms and a lot of rain because it’s hurricane season there. So, the snow brought all this communication; it brought it for about 3 hours. We’re all texting each other all through the whole weekend. It was just wonderful. So, I thank God for that, because it just brought not an inconvenience, it brought more love into our home.

Pastor Brett – Love that. Thanks Martha, Amen and Amen.

February Random Acts of Kindness

Random-Acts-of-Kindness-Logo.jpg

In honor of Black History Month, we have chosen two organizations dedicated to the needs of Black Portland residents.

The first is the North by Northeast Community Health Center:

North by Northeast Community Health Center is the only medical clinic in Oregon devoted to African American/Black health. We exist to improve health outcomes and advance health equity by offering primary care services and health education and promotion focused on the African American/Black community.

The items we need most are personal, feminine and dental hygiene supplies to stock our free bin. We anticipate we may be doing some large vaccine distribution days in the next few months, and we’d love to be able to give little care packages to folks when they get a vaccine. Here’s a specific list of things we could use:

Shampoo and conditioner
Liquid or bar soap
Hand or body lotion
Chapstick
Toothbrushes
Toothpaste
Dental Floss
Pads and tampons
Condoms
Cough drops

The second organization is Self Enhancement, Inc:

SEI is a comprehensive, one-stop resource for youth and families, primarily African Americans and others living in poverty or seeking culturally responsive services. It is also one of the city’s leading multi-service organizations, providing thousands of youth, families, and adults with a wide array of education and social services on an annual basis. SEI’s strength is in its ability to meet the complex needs of the children and families it serves, including helping people to overcome cultural, educational and economic barriers.

SEI is committed to helping youth and families realize their full potential. SEI believes that every child has a gift and that it is our shared responsibility to help every child find that gift. By expanding learning opportunities and teaching every child that “Life Has Options,” SEI is seeing amazing results proving that SEI is the solution.

SEI is seeking gift cards in any denomination and in a wide array of stores. They send them to their students to celebrate milestones, as well as using gift cards to supplement groceries for the food insecure. They recommend $10-25 cards for students, such as Amazon, Visa, or Starbucks; $50 and up for groceries with cards for Safeway, Fred Meyer, Target, or Visa.

Dropoff will be on Saturday, Feb 27. You may sign up here.

Share from your week or from today’s scripture (Psalm 147, Isaiah 40: 21-31 and Mark 1: 29-39)

Jan – Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them from all. We have a God who is very faithful and he delivers us. I want to share that I have seen God every day this week. Every single day. And he reassures me that my husband is going to be again safe and free of this fear. I love that 147th Psalm where you quoted, pastor, that says that “the Lord favors those who fear him”.  Right now, Wayne is in a real fear filled place, but not for long – it’s only temporary. Thanks for all your prayers! God Bless all of you, I love you!

Pastor Brett – Thank you, Jan. Thanks for encouraging us and we will continue to be praying for Wayne in his recovery.

Sally – That was definitely a great sermon for me. When you said at the end to take time for reflections, I bowed my head and started praying and literally said – God, what I need to propel me forward, just give me a shot in the arm to propel me forward. I said it conceptually and then I said – Oh my gosh, that is literally what I need! I need the shot in the arm. I need the immunization, I need the shot! It was just funny, I wasn’t thinking at all about Covid itself, yet that was the phrase that came to my mind. So, this just amused me. But, as you were giving your sermon, this old hymn came to mind (I brought the words up on my iPhone). “In times like these you need a savior; in times like these you need an anchor. Be very sure, be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock. This rock is Jesus….”

Neil – I know I have been burdened a lot over the last couple of days, with my dad going from a quick telemedicine appointment because he was having trouble breathing, to a CT Scan, to a paramedic trip to the hospital, to having a pint of fluid pulled away from his heart. And we still don’t have the results we’d like to have to know what’s going on. But, he’s doing better in increments, which is great, but it’s still kind of a burden to not be able to be there. To sit on the sidelines, even more so than normal, and just wait has not been the best experience. But, it’s what we’ve got right now. So, that’s been a burden. One of the things that has been very strengthening to me is that my wife and I have been able to celebrate our 23rd Anniversary today; if there’s anything that acts as an anchor for me is knowing that I’m not by myself and to give me those checks of like to know when it’s okay to be depressed and all that. But when it’s also time to know that things are moving in the right direction and to take some positivity out of it.

Pastor Brett – Thank you Neil. We continue to lift up your dad and your whole family. Congratulations and Happy Anniversary! What a witness to the anchor that is, thank you.

Kari – I’m lifting up my candle holder, because you were talking about the candles. Today, I only have one burning because right as the sermon started one of my candles went out; right when you were talking about the candles and the wick going out – the other one went out! So, I thought….hmm, that’s probably not coincidence; I prize myself on being competent and that I can do everything. So, I think that’s God reminding me that – No Kari, you can’t do everything, you need to rely on me for certain…(inaudible). So, that was a good message.

Pastor Brett – I want to thank Mark Smith for putting that message on the marque. That really strengthened me this week. He didn’t know I was preaching on the Isaiah passage. When I drove by the church, that was the inspiration for my message. So, thank you Mark.

Debbie – So, one of the things that the scripture says – They that wait upon the Lord, will renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles. If you ever know about an eagle, he doesn’t flap to soar – he waits upon the winds that lifts him up. And as we wait upon the Holy Spirit to lift us up and strengthen us, that we will be able to soar. That we won’t have to flap on our own power. We just catch the wind!

Pastor Brett – I love that, thank you Deb. That was a beautiful image there.

Laura – The part that resonates with me is that I can’t do it on my own. I pride myself on my self-reliance, and it’s a good reminder that it’s not by my power that I do it.

Krista – I’m stressed about getting everything ready to leave on vacation on top of everything else!!

Paige – This week my strength has come from knowing we had so many people praying for Neil’s dad and our family. Thank you Prayer Team.

Jan – I want to share real quick that verse that says – Through faith and patience we inherit the promises. The patience part is really hard; I can’t tell you what verse it is, but it’s in there. Bye, I love you all!

Pastor Brett – Thanks Jan. I think that’s in the book of Jan chapter 5 verses 26-28…J  Amen, Amen. Patience and waiting; that’s hard. But, sometimes God brings promises to us.

Re-imagine Building, Place, and Land This Sunday

How are we using our building and land to give glory to God and to witness to His creation? Are there budding ministries that need a place to thrive on our land? What is going on in our neighborhood and in the churches around our neighborhood? How are we connected to our place in Beaverton? Join the conversation Sunday at 10:30 am.

KIVA Continues

download (1).png

Remember donating your spare change to KIVA way back in 2019? We were able to help finance small loans in the Dominican Republic. Now, as those loans are being repaid, we are able to reloan the money.

In honor of Black History Month, loans made today to minority-owned businesses were matched dollar for dollar. We made a $25 ($50 total) loan to Kari in Arkansas, and $25 ($50 total) loan to Ebony in Federal Way, WA.

From your original investment of $747, Westsiders have made 20 loans for a total of $1225. You have made a real difference to those who face discrimination or other obstacles to obtaining credit. Thank you.

Requesting More Valentines!

20160208_104652.jpg

Please bring signed Valentine cards to our parking lot communion this Sunday, Feb 7.

We received lots of treats, enough to give valentine bags to more than just one assisted living center. If we receive more cards, we can give to three or four centers.

Non-mailable (the type that kids exchange in school) are fine. Handmade by children are fantastic. Storebought - super. Just be sure to sign them with your first name, or a heart, or “xoxo.” A few more decorated bags would also be good. Encouraging notes are always appreciated as well.

Thanks! See you Sunday at 11:00!

Bonnie – I want to thank everyone that brought notes & candy and such for our Random Act of Kindness. We received a ton of stuff; so, I’m going to be calling two or three other Assisted Living places & Rehab places and see how we can spread this love around.

Pastor Brett – Yeah! Awesome! Thank you Bonnie and everyone who participated in Random Acts of Kindness, which was doing valentines and some candies & treats for people in Assisted Living Centers. So, awesome – praise God for that!

Jan – I want to relay a little something the Lord did for me this morning. I woke up with a little song, it was about our armor; it said that our feet are shod with the preparation of peace, God my sword of the Spirit, my shield of faith, got my breastplate of righteousness, helmet of salvation, I put on my armor and I’m ready for the battle. And when I did the Jesus Calling this morning, if it wasn’t talking about armor; it said – The armor is not an inanimate object, because the armor is the truth of God. And the truth of God, the Word of God is quick & powerful, it’s alive, alert and ready for the challenge. We don’t have to worry because we have our armor on and it’s alive!

Pastor Brett – Amen! Thank you, Jan. That will dovetail nicely with the sermon. So, thank you for the alley-oop. Armor of God, Amen!

Kari – I saw a hummingbird yesterday so, that was really special. Joe and I were on a walk and then when we were coming back there was one up on (inaudible). When we were giving away the PB awards, they were giving away books and I grabbed one off the table that has morning and evening meditations. And the evening mediation the other day talked about the dove and the Ark during Noah’s Ark. God gave me this little thought about Noah’s Ark – that it might have actually been the first quarantine in recorded history. I thought – oh….he had to be with all of those animals and he really couldn’t get alone; he couldn’t even go to the store! I was like – I should not complain one little bit!

Pastor Brett – Thank you Kari. What a word that is, God doing something in the midst of confinement. Renewing something…Noah had no idea, he just had to go in and God shut the door behind him. And he didn’t know how long it was going to be for. It’s the perfect analogy for the situation we find ourselves in. We look forward to God opening the door to the Ark, so we might come out into a new world and see what God has in store for us.

Francie – While I wouldn’t recommend letting toddlers run the world, there’s a little sociopath in all of them, they do have some good moments of clarity. Sage heard us talking about politics and people being happy & sad; she asked me to explain that there are a lot of people who are confused…and she goes – You know Mom, if you want someone to clean up a mess, you probably need to help them. I was like – You know, it’s such a basic truth…and she went to the heart of if you want something to be different, you have to help them (she also wants me to help her clean up all her messes). There’s a lot we can learn from that simplicity of being kind and helping one another; if we want something to change we need something to change that and it doesn’t matter about what…(Sage says Slone keep destroying things).   I think there is a lot to that. So, there’s been a bit of progress.

Kari – My sister reached out and asked our family to pray for her because she was resigning from her job and she doesn’t have any other prospects. But, she was just so unhappy there. So, it’s just a good reminder, I think, that’s it’s okay to ask for help and (I am following up on what Sage was saying) reach out to others because we are all a community. So, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. I even said - It’s an honor to pray for you. Because, she always seemed so strong and independent; this was a good sign of humiliation, I think for her, and it brings us closer together when we do that.

Sally – I just have a thought that this week, as some of you know, I do these weekly calls to the clients of Meals on Wheels just to check in, they’re called wellness checks, just to make sure that they are doing okay. Honestly, I’ve been doing it since last April, so, I’ve known these people for 9 months. If I shut my eyes and heard their voice, I would know who they were. I thought the other day, in all of Covid, these are probably the people I have been most connected with. I am consistently talking to them once a week. They count on my call; they are so grateful for my call. My favorite guy, his name is Tom, at the end of the conversation he says – Okay Sal, great talking to you, Love You! Bye! I’m like – He just said he loves me and I have never met the man. And it was so natural for me to say – Bye Tom, Love You too! …They bless me and I know I bless them! It’s this wonderful connection that’s come about because of Covid. So, it’s been great. I want to meet them all someday, but I don’t know if I ever will.

Pastor Brett – I’ll share something I witnessed this week: I got to be a part of the Prayer Group meeting that happens once a month on the 3rd Thursday. I was able to call in while I was attending some things that were happening in my house with the kids and getting them all squared away for bedtime routines. And being with the Prayer Group this week just filled me full of hope, filled me full of the Spirit of God; it reassured me that God was at work in the world, that God was at work in our church. And it just really set the tone for lifting my spirit & lifting my attitude. So, I’m still kind of riding the high of that. And that was definitely such a good moment & good news for me this week.
