Human Relations Day

United Methodists celebrate six special Sundays each year. The purpose of this is to unite and make clear the commitment of the church as the people of God, and to give everyone the opportunity to contribute to special programs.

The first of these is this Sunday, Jan 23: Human Relations Day. Your donation, above and beyond your usual giving to the church, will support communities that lack the resources we take for granted. In 2020, over $420,000 was given towards Human Relations Day.

There will be a special envelope included in the worship bulletin this Sunday if you would like to participate. Or you may visit ResourceUMC.org/SSGive.

Want more? Check out this list of 10 books (curated in 2019) that explore the lives of persons in underserved communities.

Prayer Group

The prayer group meets this Thursday at 6:30 pm. Whether you’re a regular attendee or not, take a moment to pray for our church, our community, our country, and our world.

They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. —Acts 1:14

Interfaith Legislative Forum

Want to be a better advocate for the underserved/overlooked?

Oregon Coalition of Christian Voices is presenting an overview of legislative issues of concern to faith communities, including housing, climate, farmworker rights, and gun violence. Legislators will inform participants of the issues, and offer ways to be most effective in their advocacy.   Sun, Jan 23, 1:30 - 3:30 pm online.  Register at bit.ly/2022forumregister

Small Group Begins Tonight

Kick off 2022 with a 3-week study based on the book, “Awakening: A New Approach to Faith, Fasting and Spiritual Freedom” by Stovall Weems. The book is described this way:

Awakening helps you stir up your slumbering soul. You’ll discover how to break out of your season of dryness or get off to a great start either in the New Year or the next season in life. Take your faith-walk from a “going through the motions” or “have to” mindset to the stimulating, fresh “want to” experience of enjoying God’s presence

The group will begin Tuesday, January 11, at 7:00 pm in Stephanie’s home in Hillsboro. Email office@westsidejourney.org for the address.

Registration is not required. You may just show up but remember to purchase your book beforehand.

Big Thanks!

Thank you, Westsiders, for your generous hearts!

Local families and the Western Farm Workers Association received bags of food to brighten their holidays. And. as you can see on the far tables in the photo, there were dozens of gifts given for the children.

New Small Group

A 3-week study on fasting will begin in January, based on the book, “Awakening: A New Approach to Faith, Fasting and Spiritual Freedom” by Stovall Weems.

From the publisher’s description:

Would you describe your walk with God as fresh and exciting? Would you describe your spiritual life as vibrant and passionate? If not, would you like these attributes to be the norm in your everyday relationship with God?

Are you ready to experience an awakening?

Weems encourages you to surrender fully, to discover the right kind of fuel for the journey, and to learn a new way to pray and fast. This lifestyle is not based on rules or religion, but on a deep, satisfying, motivating relationship with God.

The books include a small group study guide, the 21-day plan with assigned reading from the book, and different ways/menus for fasting.

The group will meet Tuesdays, January 11, 18, and 25, at 7:00 pm. Location is TBD by the participants. Participants will be responsible for purchasing their own books.
