Big Thanks to HBH Volunteers

Nineteen Westsiders and friends were on hand Saturday to build walls for Help Build Hope.

Our three teams completed 12 of the total walls in about three hours. Then all the walls were loaded onto a trailer to be driven to Boise, Idaho. Once there, they will be assembled into a house through Habitat for Humanity.

Recipients are required to invest ‘sweat equity’ into their new homes. So messages to them were written on each wall.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

Free Meals for HomePlate Youth Services

The Beaverton City Library has a summer reading program called Read for Compassion, that will benefit HomePlate Youth Services.

For every 750 hours of collective reading tracked online through Aug 15, the New Friends of the Beaverton City Library will donate a week’s worth of hot meals for a youth experiencing housing instability.

Adults ages 18+ can submit their reading hours online at www.beavertonlibrary.org/ASRP or in person at the main or Scholls Ferry branches of the library. Each time you submit your hours, your name will be entered in a weekly prize drawing.

So, whether it’s on the beach, in a hammock, or on the deck — track your hours, enter your hours, and make an impact!

Friends of the Children

Beginning this Sunday, the coins and small bills collected in our Change for Change buckets will benefit Friends of the Children (friendspdx.org)

FotC is a unique program that pairs up fully-trained, paid mentors (“Friends”) with children most at risk. The relationship begins when the child is around kindergarten age and continues until they graduate from high school.

Friends support and empower youth by:

  • Spending time with or on behalf of the child in school – working with teachers, advocating for individualized academic plans, and empowering older youth to advocate for themselves.

  • Creating connections – with other youth who share their interests or to resources in their own communities.

  • Exploring their interest and sharing in new experiences, through trips to museums, visiting the library, or taking an art class.

  • Connecting youth to opportunities, like internships, scholarships, and informational interviews.

  • Helping a child identify coping skills, regulate emotions and find constructive outlets for stress and frustration.

  • Being a consistent adult in a child's life as they move from placement to placement in the foster care system.

Please contribute what you can on Sunday mornings (or earmark a donation online or through the mail). According to the Harvard Business School Association of Oregon, every $1 invested in Friends of the Children saves the community over $7 in saved social costs. Helping one child saves the community $900,000. An incredible return on investment — besides the blessing of seeing a child grow happily and healthily into an adult.

Two Out of Three

Tomatoes, snapdragons, and more have been planted.

We need to fill one more box to plant.  If you can bring a wheelbarrow and move the soil from the parking lot to the bed, we need you!

Please contact Pastor Brett if you can help, to arrange a time at your convenience.

Happy Summer!

Our first vegetable bed has been filled and planted!

As you can see in the second photo, another plot (front) has been prepared but not filled. A third plot needs to be leveled, the grass removed, and filled with soil. The soil has been delivered…now all we need is you and your wheelbarrow!

Please contact Pastor Brett to arrange a time to help, at your convenience.  Invite a friend and make it a work party!
