Bible Study Beginning Mar 9

Pastor Brett will be leading an evening bible study on some of the apocalyptic passages in the bible, beginning Mar 9.  The study will be on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm, both in-person and online.

The modern, western vernacular has come to use the word ‘apocalyptic’ to mean the end of the world.  But in the Bible, an apocalypse is what happens when someone is exposed to the transcendent reality of God’s perspective. An apocalypse is a confrontation with the divine so intense that it transforms how a person views everything.

So perhaps it’s more of a beginning...

Another Way to Support KIVA

You know KIVA - the organization that makes microloans to small entrepreneurs around the world. We have supported them for years through an initial investment donated in our change buckets.

Now they have an online gift shop where you can purchase items made by their borrowers, such as:

  • Fair trade fashion

  • Upcycled jewelry

  • Handcrafted gifts

And if you act quickly, today you can get $10 off a $30 order! (Code pops up on their website)

Gifts for those you love (including yourself!) while supporting small businesses in the USA and beyond. Win-win!

Big Thanks

Many thanks to Mark and Becky W for providing bark dust for the church’s landscaping. It makes a big difference in the look of the church.

Note from Pastor Brett

Hi Westsiders, we reviewed our abuse prevention strategies this past Sunday during our worship service, which you can watch here if you missed it.

On an extremely relevant note, I received an email on Monday morning from our denomination about a settlement with the Boy Scouts of America that I am making available to you here.

Note that most of these instances involving the Boy Scouts happened in the 1950's - 1970's, and that abuse prevention has gotten better over time in the United Methodist Church, but let us collectively renew our commitment to actively prevent abuse together here at Westside in the present and the future by actively providing a safe sanctuary to all.

Love in Christ,
Brett

Campus Beautification Tomorrow

Tomorrow at 11:00 am, let’s gather and tackle a few chores to beautify our campus for visitors and the neighborhood. Some of the chores are:

  • Pruning and trimming bushes

  • Raking and weeding

  • Cleaning the ‘reserved for visitors’ signs

  • Moving items on the property

Be sure to bring your work gloves and rakes, loppers, and pruners. A bucket would be handy, too!

We will finish at 12:30. Come, do your part to keep our campus beautiful!

Change for Change

Every Sunday during worship, spare change is collected for a designated non-profit.

For January through June of 2022, our recipient will be Self Enhancement Inc, located in NE Portland.

Self Enhancement, Inc (SEI) is dedicated to guiding underserved youth to realize their full potential. Working with schools, families, and partner community organizations, SEI provides support, guidance, and opportunities to achieve personal and academic success. SEI brings hope to individual young people and enhances the quality of community life.

SEI is a comprehensive, one-stop resource for youth and families, primarily African Americans and others living in poverty or seeking culturally responsive services. It is also one of the city’s leading multi-service organizations, providing thousands of youth, families, and adults with a wide array of education and social services on an annual basis. SEI’s strength is in its ability to meet the complex needs of the children and families it serves, including helping people to overcome cultural, educational, and economic barriers.
